COMPANY HISTORY

Smith & Company, Inc. (SCI) was founded in South Florida in 1983 by Stephen W. Smith. A South Florida native, Mr. Smith recognized the need for quality, professional site development and highway construction services to support the significant growth occurring throughout the state. SCI began with just two pieces of machinery and a firm commitment to providing dependable land development and infrastructure services.

That same year, SCI partnered with the Arvida Corporation to help develop more than 50% of what is now the City of Weston in western Broward County. Encompassing approximately 10,000 acres of Everglades land, the development included two golf courses, miles of roadways and curbing, land clearing, lake excavation, muck removal, and embankment construction. Over the course of the 19-year, $375 million development, more than 82.5 million cubic yards of material were excavated.

From the mid-1990s through the early 2000s, SCI helped transform approximately 1,500 acres of swampland into what is now known as Pembroke Falls. The completed community included more than 2,085 private residences, two apartment complexes, two schools, and numerous commercial establishments. More than 15 million cubic yards of material were excavated for the $85 million site development project, with SCI’s own forces performing the earthwork, roadway construction, concrete work, and underground utility installation.

In 1999, SCI began work with the Florida Department of Transportation on a three-mile, $48 million reconstruction project along Interstate 4. The project included the replacement of two bridges; the relocation and reconstruction of the eastbound and westbound lanes with concrete pavement; and the installation of curbing, barrier walls, water mains, and storm drainage. SCI successfully completed the project on an accelerated schedule of just over 14 months.

SCI continued its highway construction work from 2015 through 2017, performing approximately $17.8 million in work on the I-75 Express Lanes project in Pembroke Pines.

From 2018 through 2020, SCI completed three large community developments in Pasco County: Mirada, valued at $9.8 million; Mirada Active Adult, valued at $10.1 million; and Silverado, valued at $7.6 million.

In 2021, SCI expanded its presence on the Treasure Coast by completing several roadway projects within Tradition’s Legacy Park in Port St. Lucie. Together, these projects totaled more than $6.8 million over a two-year period.

In 2022, SCI began work on a $3.2 million distribution warehouse in Tradition, completing the project in less than one year.

The company continued its work in Tradition in 2023 with the start of the Cheney Brothers Distribution Center, which was completed within 14 months. During this period, SCI also completed the West Jensen commercial site, valued at more than $3.3 million, and began work on the Fresh Market project in Tradition.

In 2024, SCI completed more than $16 million in site development and infrastructure work. Major projects completed during the year included the Cheney Brothers Distribution Center at $6,467,254.88; the 250K Spec Site at $595,365.00; Chill Build at $1,401,535.53; Fresh Market at $2,129,830.72; and five separate Legacy Park projects totaling $5,414,784.23.

Also in 2024, SCI began the renovation of the Dietary Center at HCA Florida JFK Hospital in Atlantis, Florida. The $2,352,211 project was completed in 2025, along with the $431,839.51 Hegener Drive project.

During 2025, SCI also began work on several significant civil infrastructure projects. Working with Halley Engineering, SCI performed work on the Florida Department of Transportation’s T4639 Oslo Road Box Culvert project.

In Tradition, SCI began the Legacy Park Pond 1 excavation project, which involved excavating approximately 428,495 cubic yards of material to construct a new lake and stormwater facility.

Also in 2025, SCI began working with Clancy & Theys Construction on the development of the new Palm Beach Gardens Iceplex at Plant Drive Park in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. SCI’s $3,412,700 contract includes the civil and site development work required to support the new two-story, 123,245-square-foot facility.

Once completed, the Palm Beach Gardens Iceplex will feature two NHL-sized ice rinks designed to accommodate public skating, youth and adult hockey, figure skating, curling, sled hockey, and tournament events. Plans for the facility also include team locker rooms, dryland training and performance areas, academy and medical spaces, a retail store, concession areas, multipurpose rooms, and a full-service restaurant and sports bar.

The facility is being developed through a public-private partnership between the City of Palm Beach Gardens and the Palm Beach North Athletic Foundation. For additional information, visit the Palm Beach Gardens Iceplex website or the City of Palm Beach Gardens project webpage.

In 2026, SCI began work with Burkhardt Construction on Phase 1 of Torino Regional Park in Port St. Lucie. SCI’s contract for this landmark project is valued at $7,225,153.33.

Torino Regional Park is planned as a 195-acre “play forest.” Phase 1 amenities are expected to include a nature-themed destination playground with treehouse-style pods, an interactive bug-themed splash pad, pickleball courts, covered basketball courts, multipurpose athletic fields, open green space, paved walking and biking trails, unpaved nature paths, an all-wheel skate park and BMX area, covered pavilions, event plazas, and picnic areas.

More than four decades after its founding, Smith & Company, Inc. continues to build upon its reputation for experience, professionalism, and dependable performance.
